Caption:
This digitally colorized transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image, from a pelleted specimen, depicts three icosahedral-shaped herpes virus particles. The staining technique used to process this specimen revealed virions with a dark center, where the stain has penetrated, indicated a capsid with no DNA, while a virion with a light center, where there was no stain penetration, indicated a nucleocapsid, consisting of a capsid, plus its DNA core.
