This image depicts a close view of a patient’s penile shaft, highlighting the presence of an erythematous vesiculopapular lesion that was determined to have been caused by a herpes genitalis (HSV-2) outbreak. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex viruses type-1 (HSV-1), and type-2 (HSV-2), however, most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. Symptoms typically include one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum.
