This photograph depicts a left lateral view of a patient’s forehead, which reveals an ulcerative lesion. The man happened to be a Vermont muskrat trapper, who had contracted tularemia. The bacterium responsible for causing the disease tularemia, Francisella tularensis, can often be found in rodents, including rabbits, hares, and muskrats.
