Caption:
This atomic force microscopic (AFM) image of a SARS Coronavirus infected Vero E6 culture cells revealed a thickened plasma membrane. It was found that virus particles (arrowheads) could still be exported out of the puffy edge of the infected Vero E6 cells. The large number of progeny virus particles at the cell edge, may have resulted in this thickened appearance. See PHIL 6416, for a 3D reconstruction of this cytological configuration.
