Using the NanoScope IV MultiMode® atomic force microscope, the knobby, SARS Coronavirus virion surface structure, was visualized (arrow). High magnification of the maturing virus particles showed a rosette appearance with short knoblike spikes under both the scanning electron, and atomic force microscopes. The spikes, which were 16–17nm, seemed shorter than those of other coronaviruses.
