This atomic force microscopic image captured the act of virus particle extrusion from a Vero E6 culture cell’s surface 15-hours post-infection. The proposed mechanism for the export of virions to the extracellular space, involves fusion of the transport vesicle membrane to the cell surface, resulting in localized breaching of the plasma membrane where the virus extrusion occurred (thin arrows).
