This image depicts a close anterior view of a patient’s left eye, which revealed the presence of a conjunctival lesion that had been caused by a systemically disseminated Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteremia. If untreated, N. gonorrhoeae bacteria may spread to the bloodstream and, thereby, throughout the body. The most common symptoms are then rash and joint pains, but other generalized symptoms may result, including conjunctivitis.
