This image depicts a posterior view of a child’s back, revealing the presence of characteristic varicella, or chickenpox lesions, and was caused by the human herpesvirus type 3 (HHV-3), also referred to as varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The blister-like lesions produce a pus-filled center, appearing on the face, scalp, or trunk. Varicella is highly contagious, and spreads via coughing, or sneezing. Complications include bacterial infection of the skin, swelling of the brain, and pneumonia.
