This photograph captured in 1977, depicted Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) epidemiologist, Dr. Joseph McCormick, while he was standing in a Sierra Leone laboratory, where as an EIS Officer, he participated in the country’s Lassa Fever Research Project. In Kenema, Dr. McCormick was involved in the epidemiologic investigation and treatment of Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LHF), after which he published a landmark article in the New England Journal of Medicine, on effective antiviral treatment for LHF.
