Caption:
This image depicts a close intraoral view of a HIV/AIDS-positive patient, who had presented with a gingival squamous cell carcinomatous lesion. Being that HIV reduces immunologic activity, the intraoral environment is a prime target for chronic secondary infections and inflammatory processes, and therefore, because these may be precursors to cancer, squamous carcinomatous lesions like the one depicted here.
