This illustration depicts a close view of the head region of two representative Ixodid hard ticks, highlighting their mouthparts. Focus is placed on comparing the morphology exhibited by the basis capitula of various tick genera. Ticks of the genera, Dermacentor and Anocentor, possess basis capitula that do not project laterally. Ticks that are members of genera, Boophilus and Rhipicephalus, do display lateral extensions of their basis capitula.
