Caption:
This illustration depicts a dorsal view of an adult female hard, or Ixodid tick, highlighting the hard chitinous shield on its dorsal abdomen, referred to as the scutum. The female on the left had not consumed a recent blood meal, while the female on the right had just consumed a host blood meal, and was engorged with blood. Note how the small scutum allowed for the expansion of its abdomen, while the male hard tick, depicted in PHIL 6014, exhibits a scutum that covers its entire dorsal abdomen.
