This image depicts an early 1980’s model of a portable computer, which was the Global Health Odyssey’s Historical Object of the Month, for August 2004. In this view, the computer case was closed, concealing the device. Used at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1982, this 64K RAM model, which weighed 24.5 pounds, was the first true portable computer. The new technology allowed Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officers to more accurately gather, and transport data in the field. See PHIL 6012 for a view of the opened case, and the computer inside.
