This Giemsa-stained, thin film blood smear photomicrograph reveals the presence of a platelet artifact that could be mistaken for a malarial parasite. Note the morphologic similarities between this cluster of platelets and a late-staged malarial schizont containing a number of merozoites, as seen in PHIL 5820.
