Description:This 1980s image shows Vince Demaggio, Div. of Laboratory Sciences, National Center for Environmental Health, working with a mass spectrometer.
By knowing how much force is applied to, and the size of the ion, and the degree, or measurement of the ions deflection, the mass of the affected ion can be calculated. This is what a mass spectrometer does to calculate mass and ion concentrations.
