This 1975 image depicted an example of improperly installed lavatory water faucets, in which case, the faucet openings were lower than the sink’s spill rim, making the back-siphonage of dirty water possible. In this case, if the drain clogged, and the water level rose, the dirty sink water would come into contact with the end of the faucet. The intended audience was public health inspectors in charge of water-related sanitation practices.
