This photomicrograph reveals the presence of the Gram-negative, diplococcal bacterium, Neisseria subflava. These Gram-negative cocci can normally be found on the mucous membranes of the human respiratory tract. Though usually non-pathogenic, N. subflava have been found responsible for some cases of endocarditis, meningitis, and endophthalmitis.
