This photograph depicts a number of mosquito pupae, and was created during a 1972 study of disease carriers, and pests of migrant labor camps. The pupal stage of a mosquito’s life occurs between the larval and the adult stages. Mosquito larvae of most species exhibit a prominent breathing siphon. The larvae rest suspended diagonally from the water surface, while the end of their siphon tube penetrates the surface, thereby, enabling the larvae to access their air supply.
