This photograph depicts a dorsal view of two Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever ticks, Dermacentor andersoni, a male on the right, and a female on the left. The image was created during a 1953 study of disease carriers and pests found in and around migrant labor camps. Ticks commonly bite man, and some may spread serious diseases, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which is caused by the bacterium, Rickettsia rickettsii. This disease is commonly found in the eastern, and southeastern United States.
