This 1979 photograph depicted what at the time, was some of the deterioration of the bridge’s infrastructure, which included the flaking of paint from the metal beams. The paint that was shed, contain lead that was polluting the subjacent neighborhoods, and the Mystic River below. Abrasive blasting techniques were used to remove the hazardous leaded paint from parts of the bridge passing over neighborhoods, while a scraping technique was performed on that part of the structure that passed over the water.
