This 1964 image, captured by the creator of the renown Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), Dr. Alex Langmuir, depicts a camel relaxing in a village in the state of Gujarat, India. EIS officers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), visited India in 1964, during a smallpox outbreak. Largely through the effort of the CDC, and partners including India, the worldwide eradication of smallpox was achieved. In 1980 the WHO declared the global eradication of smallpox due to a worldwide vaccination campaign. The WHO then recommended that all countries cease vaccination.
