This image depicts a left anterior-oblique view of the legs of an infant, revealing the presence of numerous maculopapular lesions, which were the result of a condition known as eczema vaccinatum, a serious, potentially life-threatening skin rash caused by widespread dissemination of vaccinia virus. This rash appears in people with a preexisting skin infection, including skin conditions such as eczema or atopic dermatitis, who receive a smallpox vaccination.
