Caption:
This illustration depicts a left lateral view of a chigoe flea, Tunga penetrans, highlighting morphologic characteristics differentiating these fleas from others, including no large bristles on the insect’s head, and only a few scattered bristles on the inner surface of the 3rd coxa. It burrows under a human’s toenails, and during egg development, the female can swell to the size of a pea.
