Caption:
This illustration depicts a left lateral view of a flea, highlighting some of the morphologic characteristics found on the exterior of the abdominal region of this insect. Note that the shape of the seventh sternal plate is also used in identifying female fleas of various species. The plate’s posterior margin may be smooth, or emarginated, i.e. notched, depending on the species of flea.
