Caption:
This illustration depicts a left lateral view of a flea, highlighting some of the morphologic characteristics on the exoskeletal surface of the insect’s abdominal region. Here, you can see two different examples of the bristle, or setae, patterns atop the abdominal tergal plates. The arrangement of setae on the tergal plates, is used when classifying fleas into families. Some families have only one row of setae on each tergum, some have two such rows, and some may display additional apical spinelets.
