This photomicrograph of a methenamine silver stained unidentified tissue sample, revealed the presence of a budding cell of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, in a case of paracoccidioidomycosis. Note how this multipolar budding yeast form, morphologically resembles what has been referred to as a ship’s wheel, which is a distinctive diagnostic characteristic for P. brasiliensis.
