This 1976 photograph demonstrated how irrigation run-off water from a Washington farm, had accumulated in a stagnant roadside irrigation pond, You are also able to see a number of sprinklers in the background. Water used for irrigation can produce these stagnant pools, which can then act as breeding grounds for hundreds of thousands of mosquitoes, if the larvae are allowed to stand for a few days. This region was part of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation focusing on the minimization of risks of vector-borne diseases in water resource developments. All water treatment plants must meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.
