Caption:
This 1976 photograph depicts cattle that were standing in muddy-water at the edge of an irrigated pasture in California. The importance of this image lies in the fact that irrigated pastures provide an ideal habitat for Aedes vexans, a common nuisance mosquito, in the United States, and a known vector for the West Nile virus. These mosquitoes lay their eggs in areas like this, that are occasionally covered with water.
