Caption:
Under a magnification of 1150X, this blood smear photomicrograph revealed the presence of numerous Plasmodium falciparum ring-form parasites. Note that some red blood cells (RBCs) contain multiple parasites, which is a phenomenon more common to P. falciparum than other Plasmodium spp. The affected RBCs contain delicate cytoplasm, and 1-2 small chromatin dots with occasional “appliqué”, or accolé ring-forms.
