Caption:
This photograph was captured during a 1975 plague and tick fever study, and depicts a black billed magpie, Pica pica, that was perched on the skeletal remains of a deer. Magpies are instrumental in drawing coyotes together. These animal gathering places makes it easier for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers to study local animal populations for signs of infectious diseases.
