This historic photograph, depicts former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director, Jeffrey Koplan, MD, MPH, participating in smallpox eradication efforts in this cattle market located in Barisal, Bangladesh, in 1973. That year, for a three month period, Dr. Koplan led a 6-person team, who were responsible for conducting case-finding and outbreak-control. Dr. Koplan was a past CDC Director from 1998 - 2002, as well as a member of the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), class of ’74. Here, he was on a field assignment in the country of Bangladesh, participating in the world wide smallpox eradication efforts, which took place during the 1970’s.
