Here in this 1974 image, blood was being extracted from the jugular vein of this bird, and would later be tested for the presence of arbovirus. The study of bird-based arbovirus infections is important because birds serve as the vertebrate reservoir hosts in the transmission cycle of numerous arboviruses, including the West Nile virus.
