Caption:
This is a close left lateral view of a red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, formerly known as Solenopsis saevissima var. richteri. This specimen was a major worker, the largest of all worker fire ants, measuring 3-5mm in length. These larger ants act as defenders of their colony, and assist the minor workers in carrying food to their nest.
