This was the cover of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publication, Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID), Volume 5, Number 4, July-August 1999 issue. The cover artwork entitled, “Gassed” (1919)”, was created by John Singer Sargent, and was reprinted with permission of the Imperial War Museum, London. It depicts a line of blindfolded WWI soldiers, who had suffered injuries sustained during a mustard gas attack, on their way to what had been called a dressing station.
