Caption:
Captured in 1969, this photograph depicts a superior view of a chickenpox patient’s right shoulder, revealing the appearance of the rash, by day-3 of the illness. Note that the lesions were in different developmental stages, including papules, small vesicles, and one or two scabbing pustules. There are times when a chickenpox rash may be confused with the skin eruptions of smallpox.
