This photograph depicts two culture flasks that contained a growth medium, which had been inoculated with the fungal organism, Histoplasma capsulatum. The flask on the left was inoculated with a properly concentrated sputum specimen, while the right flask was inoculated with 0.1ml of un-concentrated sputum, whereupon, encapsulated Gram-negative rods had overgrown much of medium.
