Captured in New Mexico in 2003, this photograph depicted a scene commonly encountered on the state’s plains. Here, you can see a prairie dog, which is a member of the genus Cynomys, frolicking around its safe subterranean burrow. In June 2003, mpox was reported among several people in the United States. Most of these people became ill after coming into contact with pet prairie dogs that were sick with the virus. This was the first outbreak of mpox in the United States.
