Captured in 1975, this Nepalese child was exhibiting signs of extreme malnutrition, known as marasmus. Here, a public health field worker was examining the child for signs of pedal edema. The signs of marasmus are loose, folded skin and a protruding rib cage. These signs manifest themselves in developing children, who are not ingesting the proper amount of nutrients their rapidly developing bodies require. Its onset is quite rapid, producing profound negative consequences on the child’s future health.
