This photomicrograph reveals multiple perithecia, or fruiting bodies, of a Chaetomium spp. fungus. These perithecia were large, dark brown to black in color, fragile, oval or flask-shaped, and have wavy and/or straight filamentous appendages. Chaetomium spp. are among the fungi, which cause infections referred to as phaeohyphomycosis.
