This is an illustration of a sand fly, or biting midge, Culicoides guttipennis. Biting midges are small robust insects with piercing, and sucking mouthparts, that belong to the family of flies, Ceratopogonidae. Some Culicoides spp. are vectors of parasitic nematodes such as, Mansonella perstans, also referred to as, Acanthocheilonema perstans.
