This photomicrograph of an unidentified tissue specimen processed using the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining method, revealed some of the histopathologic changes associated with a case of phaeohyphomycosis, caused by the fungal organism, Wangiella dermatitidis. Phaeohyphomycosis is of a group of fungal infections characterized by superficial and deep tissue involvement, caused by dematiaceous, dark-walled fungi that form pigmented hyphae, or fine branching tubes, and yeast-like cells in the infected tissues.
