This boy was suffering from a skin rash associated with a case of pellagra, brought on by a niacin, vitamin B3, deficiency. Pellagra is a disease caused by a dietary deficiency, or failure of the body to absorb niacin, vitamin B3, or tryptophan, an amino acid. Pellagra is characterized by scaly skin sores, diarrhea, mucosal changes, and mental symptoms.
