Caption:
This 1975 photograph depicts what had been a Jembec gonorrhea culture plate that was about to be inoculated using a cross-streaking method (see PHIL 3718). Due to the fact that Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria are rapidly killed by drying, the plate must be streaked in the examination room, which then facilitates survival of the specimen during transported. The Jembec plate contains Thayer-Martin growth medium, along with a CO2 pellet.
