Description:This image depicts the pre-stain addition of a microbiologic specimen to a fresh, sterile glass microscope slide, which would subsequently be stained, or diluted prior to staining, fixed, and dried, an finally placed under a microscope for observation.
After mixing, the suspension is placed on a microscope slide using a cotton swab and allowed to dry. The slide will then be stained using the technique appropriate to the characteristics of the suspected microorganism, i.e. Gram stain, Giemsa stain, etc.
