This image depicts Step 4a of 5 in the pre-stain technique practiced prior to performing the Gram-stain procedure. See PHIL ID#’s: 3431, 3572, 3432, 3565, (3429, and 3430 step 4 alternatives) 3428 for the complete set of pre-staining steps. Here, some of the suspension was being applied to a microscope slide using a cotton swab, which would then be allowed to dry. The slide would then be stained using the technique appropriate to the characteristics of the suspected microorganism, i.e., Gram stain, Giemsa stain, etc.
