This image reveals the underside of the lid that would seal what is referred to, as an Oxoid® jar, which is a cylindrical container that is used to create, and contain an atmosphere devoid of oxygen. The teabag-like sachet, or catalase screen, contains a catalytic agent, which when exposed to air, depletes it of its content of oxygen, thereby, creating an anaerobic atmosphere. See PHIL 3521, for an example of a complete Oxoid® jar. Stacked inside the Oxoid® jar, would be Petri dish culture plates that had been inoculated with microbial organisms whose ability to thrive depended upon the absence of oxygen within their growth environment. This lid, coupled with its jar, would create just such environmental conditions.
