Caption:
This image depicted a plantar view of an infant’s feet revealing the presence of congenital syphilitic lesions caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum. In this case, this syphilitic illness resulted in the death of this newborn infant. Depending on how long a pregnant woman has been infected, she has a good chance of having a stillbirth, known as syphilitic stillbirth, or of giving birth to a baby who dies shortly after birth.
