Captured in 1964, this image was a composed of two sets of four images highlighting smallpox vaccination site takes, photographed at different intervals, over a 2-week period. An accelerated response occurs when having previously been exposed to the smallpox virus, the body reacts to a vaccination in a rapid fashion, attacking the pathogen, in this case, the vaccinia virus. The four squares above, patient AA 041, represent vaccination administered using multiple points of pressure, or by way of the bifurcated needle, while those squares below, patient BA 144, represent vaccine administered by way of a jet injector.
