Captured in 1972 in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, this image depicts the exposed back of a young woman, who’d become infected with the smallpox virus, and had developed a maculopapular rash, which you’re able to see on the skin of her back. This was a patient infected with smallpox during the March, and April 1972, Kosovo smallpox epidemic. During the epidemic, over 170 individuals were infected with smallpox. The outbreak began when a traveler returned to his home in Kosovo carrying the deadly virus.
