This photomicrograph, captured in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, in 1972, depicts three men standing outside, next to an automobile. It was determined to be the man in the center, who was the Index Case, for the Kosovo smallpox epidemic in March, and April 1972. The outbreak began when this man had returned to his home in Kosovo, carrying the deadly virus.
