Caption:
Photographed in 1964, on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, this image depicts two Puerto Rican public health field workers, who were in the process of adding acrolein to this waterway in order to control schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia. Normally used as a biocide to kill submersed water weeds, acrolein is also used to curb the snail population integral to the lifecycle of the Schistosoma trematodes, responsible for causing schistosomiasis. The photograph was captured during a Puerto Rican public health schistosomiasis survey.
